What I’m Wearing Today

10 Jan

Hopefully the work day will go by quickly so I can get back home and do more work.  We found out while demo-ing the bathroom that there’s a huge rotten spot to deal with…so there’s that.  Hopefully this will be the last bump in the road, because I can’t take any more!!!

Anyway, I’m wearing an army green dress I bought at Macy’s and my trusty cognac Target boots.  This dress was in storage for awhile so it feels new to me!

A Few Photos

9 Jan

These past few weeks have been cuh-razy busy around here.  We moved back into our house after a tree fell on it, and because we lost literally everything we owned, we have all new furniture!  We also remodeled the kitchen last week and just started on the last project – the bathroom!  I am glad to be home but I will be even more excited when everything is done, probably the middle or end of next week.  We are having a house re-warming shindig on the 21st, so it will all be done by then.

Our new living room.

I can’t tell you how good it feels to be back home and cooking in my own (newly fancified) kitchen.  Hopefully in the upcoming weeks, I will be able to post more food pictures as well as outfit posts.  In the meantime, here are a few photos I took with my iphone over the past few days.  Hope your new year is off to a great start!  Mine definitely is.

Sneak peak of the kitchen. My Sunday a.m.

Favorite drink - local too!

What I’m Wearing to Work

27 Dec

This week is like casual Friday, but all week!  I simply cannot express how exciting this is for me.  It’s really helpful, because C and I are working on some remodeling projects for our house and moving our stuff back in after an extended period of living at my mom’s house (more on that later), so I’ll be able to go straight from work to working on the house without changing.  Yay!  Please pardon the work bathroom.  Maybe one day I’ll do better.  Anyway, I’m wearing Gap skinny jeans, Target turtleneck tissue tee, Express camisole, and Target cognac colored boots.  Simple and comfortable for this gloomy day.

Christmas Trip to Gatlinburg

27 Dec

C and I took a quick trip to Gatlinburg for Christmas and to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary a little early (our real anniversary is New Years Eve).  We arrived in Gatlinburg around 7 p.m. on Friday and ate a quick dinner at a local restaurant.  Then, we went to the private cabin we rented, which was awesome, and took a dip in the hot tub.  The next day, we took a walk in Downtown Gatlinburg, rode the Skylift (an old ski lift), and did some shopping.  We ordered a pizza that night and did some serious relaxing back at the cabin.  On Christmas Day, we commenced further relaxation and drove to Ashville.  The drive was beautiful, and so was the city.  We grabbed some Chinese food in Ashville and headed back to the cabin, where we (you guessed it) relaxed.  We left Gatlinburg early Monday morning and stopped in Atlanta for an Ikea run.  Then, it was back home yo Birmingham and back to reality.  On the bright side, this week and next are both 4 day work weeks.  Hooray!

What I’m Wearing to Work

21 Dec

Today is a rainy, drizzly day, so I didn’t want to wear pants because the bottoms seem to get soggy and wet.  Instead, I went with a Nine West dress (via Steinmart), Betsy Johnson black tights (via TJ Maxx), and black flats from Target.  It’s simple, but I like the mod feel, and it’s super comfortable.  I will also probably be wearing this outfit to a Hanukkah dinner at my dad’s house tonight, but I brought jeans, a blouse, and a cardigan just in case.  You can never be too prepared, if you ask me!

p.s.: Sorry for the not-so-pretty setting for this photo.  I don’t have a full length mirror or a good camera.  Maybe soon, though!

Husband’s Birthday Dinner and New Favorite Beer

20 Dec

A couple of weeks ago, my mom took C and me out to dinner at Dyron’s Low Country in Crestline Village to celebrate C’s birthday. The food was delicious – I ordered pork and grits, C ordered fried chicken, and my mom ordered baked oysters and a wedge salad. What really blew me away were the drinks. My mom ordered a jalapeno-pear margarita, and C and I both ordered high-gravity beers – La Fin Du Monde. All I can say is yum. It is a Belgian-style golden ale, and it tasted like bananas, juicy fruit, black pepper, clove, and bread. It was incredibly heavy – I could barely drink one. However, it was so tasty that I immediately bought the first case I could find.

I wore an H&M plaid grandpa jacket, a white tank, a black scarf from Steinmart, Gap skinny jeans, and cognac colored target boots. C wore a blue polo and Gap khakis.

What I Wore Last Weekend

20 Dec

Over the weekend, a group of our friends threw a naughty dirty santa party.  It was so much fun – we brought a dick towel (ala It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia, which I’m pretty sure no one got) and came home with a shiny new….toy.

Anyway, on to what I wore: black stretch flare jeans from Target, flutter sleeve blouse from Gap (on sale now for $25!), black wedge lace-up booties from target, and earrings from Target that promptly broke.  C wore Dockers slacks, a blue checked Tommy Hilfiger button up (hand me down from my Dad), black work boots, and a zip up sweater from TJ Maxx.  He usually dresses himself, but he let me dress him for this occassion.  That is one patient man.

Review: VJ’s on the Runway

20 Dec

Today, I met my hubby (we shall call him “C”) for lunch at VJ’s Cafe on the Runway.  We’ve been there once before, and although it was on the disappointing side, I decided I could give it one more shot.

We arrived before a major rush (if there is any at all), and we chose a booth near the window.  Normally, half the fun of the restaurant is watching planes take off and land, but there wasn’t much of that going on there today.  A waitress came and took our order pretty much immediately.  I ordered one of the Tuesday specials, Fried Chicken Breast, and I chose mashed potatoes, turnip greens, and fried applies for my sides.  C ordered a Cuban sandwich with fries.

The first problem we encountered was small but still annoying – our food didn’t come out at the same time.  Apparently, each plate of food is written on a different ticket, so they’re served up as they’re ready.  This might not be a big deal to some people, but mine came out first and I had to watch it get cold while we waited for C’s food.

Once C’s Cuban came out, we dug in.  The potatoes were standard cafeteria style mashed potatoes.  They were nothing special.  The turnip greens were soggy, bland, and mostly inedible.  The apples were ok, but not knock-your-socks-off or anything.  I prefer cracker barrel fried apples.  The fried chicken was really tasty, though, and it wasn’t too greasy.  Unfortunately, I didn’t snap a photo of the Cuban, which is a real shame because it was effing delicious.  If we ever go back (I’m sure we will, options are limited where we work), I’ll definitely be getting that.  It was a pressed sandwich with what tasted like plain ol’ pulled pork, mustard, melted cheese, and a generous heap of pickles.  The fries were crisp and golden brown.

While this wasn’t the best dining experience ever, I think I may have just ordered the wrong thing.  Sandwiches are apparently the thing to get at VJ’s on the runway.  The service is decent and I like that it’s family owned rather than a chain.  Overall, I rate it a 5.5/10.

Welcome, y’all!

20 Dec

Welcome to my new blog, where I will be posting about the things I love most – cooking, eating, and getting dressed (up).  I know I will have approximately 0 blog readers as of now, so this is really just for my personal enjoyment and documentation of my life as a newlywed culinary school  (and regular college) graduate who really likes to shop, eat, and play.
